After 20 years of teaching and research in biology, Dr. Agni Vlavianos-Arvanitis founded the Biopolitics International Organisation (B.I.O.) in Athens, Greece, in 1985. Since then, the organization, which is primarily concerned with international environmental cooperation and education, has grown to include eminent representatives in 124 countries world-wide. In 1990, Dr. Arvanitis launched the International University for the Bio-Environment and, in 1992, a campaign for Bios Prizes and cease-fire during the Olympics
Prolific author and poet and recipient of many high distinctions, including the 2004 Biopolicy Award by the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences and the Abdi Ipekci Peace and Friendship Prize, she is Honorary President for Life of the UNA of Sri Lanka, Honorary Professor of St. Petersburg State University, Honorary Doctor of Mendeleyev University, Trustee of the Uganda National Foundation for Research and Development, Corresponding Member of the Pontifical Academy for Life, Member of the Board of the Euro-Arab Cooperation Center, Founding Member of the Balkan Academy of Sciences New Culture and Sustainable Development, and was Vice President of the UNESCO-MAB Hellenic National Committee and of the International Bioethics Society.
She is also Member of Transparency International, the Academic Committee of the Regional Interdisciplinary Programme for Bioethics in Latin America, the International Academy of Ecology, Human and Nature Safety Sciences, the Journal of Cleaner Production Advisory Board, the Hellenic Philosophical Society and the National Society of Greek Writers. She has also been many times nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize |
