Interview with Mrs. Ralitza Angelova, Deputy Executive Director of Balbok Engineering Co.

Ralitza Anguelova, BalBok

Mrs. Angelova, please present briefly Balbok Engineering Co.

BalBok Engineering Co. is a leading company in the environmental field with over 20 years of experience. Our main activity is connected with waste management as well as consulting and training activities, scientific research and project management in the area of environmental protection.

Which of your products and services have widest application?

I will rather not put an emphasis on particular product or service. Of course, the focus is hazardous waste. BalBok Engineering offers a comprehensive service for treatment of all kinds of hazardous waste, including obsolete pesticides, PCB-containing oils and equipment, mercury and mercury-containing units, laboratory smalls. We deliver containers for waste collection, provide packages, offer repackaging on site, transportation, recovery, disposal and export of waste for treatment in specialized facilities within the EU. The company's customers can rely on professional solutions and consultancy for every specific case.

Tell us about your projects - recently realized and future ones.

We are particularly happy with the results of our joint project with Sofia Municipality for collection of hazardous waste. Since the beginning of 2012 we started the implementation of the highly successful System for separate collection of household hazardous waste on the territory of Sofia Municipality, which combines economic efficiency, accessibility and safety, and contributes significantly to the separation of hazardous waste from the general waste stream. We are happy that the number of people, who benefit, surpasses the expectations. Together we made the first big step towards a cleaner and tidy European city.

Are you interested in expanding your market in the neighboring to Bulgaria countries?

Of course, we have.

What will you present at the exhibition?

In May, we will present our recently opened Centre for Development of Ecological Infrastructure, which is located near our site in Stara Zagora. The center will be a unique place in Bulgaria for conducting research, consulting and training activities in waste management, improvement, preservation and restoration of the environment and development of ecological infrastructure. In addition to the scientific work and training the Centre will organize workshops, conferences, seminars and exhibitions.

What are your expectations from your participation in the Exhibition?

We are taking part in the exhibition for a third consecutive year. Again, we look forward to contact new companies in our field of work to collaborate with and exchange ideas. We can’t wait to showcase and share our achievements over the past year as well as to present what’s new.

What kind of visitors would you like to make contact with?

We expect to meet our customers and partners, as well as students and young ecologists for whom the environmental protection is not only a professional choice but also a vocation. They are all welcome!

ECOWEB - Your Gateway to European Eco-Innovations

ECOWEB is a smart online platform (www.ecoweb.info) that provides up-to-date information on hundreds of European eco-innovations, including technologies, applications, products, processes and other solutions from all sectors. It aims to link enterprises, in particular SMEs, and eco-innovations to increase the uptake of EU-funded research.

“Eco-innovation is the introduction of any new or significantly improved product (goods or service), process, organisational change or marketing solution that reduces the use of natural resources (including materials, energy, water and land) and decreases the release of harmful substances across the whole life cycle” - Eco-innovation Observatory, 2010

Semantic barriers such as language and accessibility of information hinder an effective uptake across the EU and slow down the diffusion of research results into reliable market products and services. To bridge this gap; to help Economy and Research get together - ECOWEB has been developed.Ecoweb

Within the over 1.100 eco-innovations displayed currently in the beta version of ECOWEB launched this April 2013, you can find for example: 160 eco-innovations related with the Waste Management & Recycling sector, 110 with the Smart Building, 37 with Biofuels and 170 with Resource Efficiency. And many more eco-innovations coming soon within these and other business and research sectors!

Visit www.ecoweb.info to start finding the right piece to your eco-innovation ideas.

At Save the Planet 2013, we will present the ECOWEB platform: how to benefit from it (easily find/receive/share info on top eco-innovations) and how to be a part of the ECOWEB network (ECOWEB Partner programme). On 29th of May ECOWEB will be presented by eutema (Project Coordinator) in the official programme of the South-East European Conference on Waste Management and Recycling. On 29th and 30th May, an info-booth will be available at the exhibition area for further information on ECOWEB.

The world of eco-innovations is out there and ECOWEB is the place to get in touch with it.

The ECOWEB project is coordinated by eutema Technology Management and is carried out by a multinational Consortium from Austria, France, Germany and Italy and is supported by the European Commission under the Seventh Framework Programme (FP7/2007-2013) under grant agreement nr. 282854. Institute for Sustainable Waste management & Technology, Austria

Montanuniversitaet Leoben is well-known as one of the best Universities in Austria and undertakes high-quality research in a wide range of technological areas (material science& technology, metallurgy, geophysics, mineral resources & petroleum engineering, mechanical engineering, polymer engineering, sustainable waste management and technology, structural and functional ceramics, etc.). This means that the different research areas are mainly focused along the “added value chain”, from the extraction of raw materials and their preparation, material & product development, production processes, manufacturing, building components/plants up to recycling and deposition. Services of Montanuniversitaet Leoben embrace R&D for SMEs, for industry as well as for public institutions. Additionally Montanuniversitaet Leoben participates in setting-up of national competence centres, CD laboratories, research studios as well as takes part in a high number of national, European and international research projects.

The Chair of Waste Treatment Technologies and Landfilling, presented by the O.Univ.Prof.Dipl.-Ing.Dr.techn. Karl E. Lorber, and Chair of Waste Processing Technology and Waste Management, presented by the Univ.Prof.Dipl.-Ing.Dr.mont. Roland Pomberger, deal with national and international waste management and waste technology projects. The Institute´s team consists of ten scientific assistants and owns laboratory for environmental analysis accredited according to ISO 17025. The laboratory is equipped with effective analysis of waste water, soil, waste products, residual materials and process parameter.

In fact production and consumption without waste are de facto not possible (yet). Waste management copes with the task of material processing and thermal utilization or professional disposal of wastes. Waste avoidance and waste reduction are also part of the objectives of waste management which can only be implemented by regulating interference along the value chain.

A multitude of research projects deals with avoidance/reduction, utilization and disposal is realized in cooperation with different partners.

Activities and focus areas:

- Material waste recovery = Recycling (examination of recycling rates for different waste sorts (e.g. WEEE), recycling of waste water and its re-usage in different processes, storage, transport and treatment of Lithium-Ion-Batteries etc.)

- Thermal waste treatment/recovery (e.g. waste incineration technology, examination of pollutions (14C-radio carbon method) and quality assurance for used wastes, application of Refuse Derived Fuels in co-incineration plants (e.g. cement industry), new innovative HotDisc-Technology, legal compliance and its implementation in consideration with sampling plan and its realization etc.)

- Treatment of hazardous waste (chemical-physical waste treatment, treatment of medical waste (sterilization, disinfection and anodic oxidation etc.))

- Landfill technology (landfill performance e.g. bottom and cover sealing system, utilization of landfill gas, treatment of leachate, landfill after care technology etc.)

- Contaminated sites (e.g. chromate contaminated areas are treated by the new institute´s patented technology for decontamination and purification of water and soil etc.)

-  Organization of well known congress (DepoTech; www.depotech.at) on waste management, waste technology, landfill technology and site remediation
