A circular economy keeps the value of resources in the economy for as long as possible. Achieving progress in this area will contribute to the competitiveness of the European Union, the creation of sustainable jobs and our climate and environmental objectives. Rozalina Petrova (Directorate General for the Environment, European Commission) will present the new Circular Economy Package adopted by the European Commission in December 2015.

This package includes an Action Plan which covers the whole life cycle of products and materials with concrete measures for the coming three-four years. The legislative proposals on waste offer ambitious yet realistic mid- and long-term targets for the recycling of municipal and packaging waste and a long-term target to significantly reduce the landfilling of municipal waste. Concrete measures are foreseen to ensure effective implementation and address obstacles on the ground, such as promoting the use of economic instruments, minimum requirements for extended producer responsibility schemes, provisions on waste prevention, as well as harmonizing definitions and simplifying reporting requirements.
