Biological and Thermal Energy from Waste Technologies to Generate Value from Waste
In Bulgaria, as in many other regions around the world, a trend is emerging towards separate collection and/or treatment of organic wastes. While combustion is the only proven technology for recovering energy and materials from mixed post-recycling residual wastes, it might not be the most efficient process for the typically low-calorific value, wet organic portion in the residual waste alone. Once that organic portion can be separately collected or efficiently separated it is suitable for treatment in another proven EfW process: Anaerobic Digestion.
This presentation will describe the relative advantages of both anaerobic digestion as a biological and combustion as a thermal Energy-from-Waste technology in treating organic and residual waste fractions.
